Roof Rakes Buying Guide
Material
Because snow can be heavy, you should look for a roof rake that is made of high-quality, durable materials, such as aluminum or steel. However, there are some rakes made of strong plastics that get the job done.
Reach
Roof rakes come in a variety of lengths. For instance, adjustable ones can extend from 60 inches up to 21 feet. You should, of course, choose a rake that meets your requirements, knowing that a longer rake will also be slightly more difficult to push against heavy snow. Additionally, purchasing one that extends farther than needed can unnecessarily increase your costs.
Width
The rake, itself, can vary in size. You should look for one that is large enough without adding too much weight to the rake. Rakes can range in size from less than 16 inches to just about 25 inches.
Weight
Snow roof rakes vary in weight, ranging anywhere from 48 ounces to 10 pounds. You should be sure to purchase the weight that you can comfortably handle. Otherwise, you will be in for a frustrating time and may even succumb to an injury.
Assembly
There are typically two types of snow roof rakes. The first comes in sections that you will need to assemble. When choosing this type, be sure to look for one that does not require tools as there is no need to make this job any harder than it already is.
Additionally, snow roof rake poles that come in sections involve three of four predetermined lengths. Depending on your needs, you might want one that is telescopic or made of one single length.
A telescoping roof rake, for instance, does not require assembly. Telescoping also means that you can push of a button to extend the pole to the required height.
In the end, each type can provide quality snow removal, so it is up to your personal preference as to which type will work best for you.
Ergonomic handle
Not all snow roof rakes include an ergonomic handle. An ergonomic handle is designed to help you keep a firm grip on the roof rake while also providing an extra layer of comfort.
Wheels
The inclusion of wheels on a snow roof rake has two purposes. The first is to help you push and pull the rake with more ease. The second, and perhaps more important reason, is to ensure you do not damage your roof.
Wheels protect your roof by creating a small space between the roof and the rake. This space is small enough to not hamper the removal of the snow while ensuring you do not catch on such things as your shingles, causing unwanted and costly repairs.
